Welcome to the Assessment for Learning 2021 Conference.

All the information you need for the conference is on our Mission Control Page, conveniently linked on our conference website: www.assessmentforlearningconference.org/missioncontrol

There, you’ll find:

  • Our Conference Schedule

  • All flipped sessions on the Participate Platform

  • The link for our General Session room, where you can always find a human to chat with for help

  • The Miroverse, our asynchronous space for you to reflect, connect and play- JUMP THERE NOW

FAQ:

  • Where can I find the Zoom links for individual sessions? All links for Zoom and other session materials are in the individual session pages on the Conference Schedule. When you add something to your schedule, you will not receive a confirmation of your attendance. You will need to log into sched to click on the yellow button that says video link OR click on “Session Zoom Link” in the description.

  • Do I have to pre-register for a session in order to attend? You can still attend a session if you did not pre-register. If you plan on joining a session, it’s helpful to pre-register so that the host knows about how many people to expect, but it’s not required.

  • Should I watch the Flipped Sessions before the Conference? You are welcome to watch these before, during and after the conference. We’ve built in breaks during both days so that you can explore this flipped content. All Q&A sessions have flipped content, and we recommend watching these before attending the session if possible. That said, if you’re not able to watch the flipped content ahead of time you are still welcome to join the session!

  • Need Help? If you have questions or need help navigating the Conference, you can always visit the General Session link. Whether there’s a “mainstage” session or not, you’ll find our Space Concierge | Help Desk to answer your questions.

Workshop | Abolitionist Leadership
SESSION ZOOM LINK

Reimagining accountability for the sake of the community may seem obvious, but it isn’t. It demands asking a lot of all, which is often why teaching and learning leaders stray away from reimagining how we do and embody accountability, as to avoid the risks of asking a lot from folx within a community who are already stretched. But reimagining accountability in humanizing and transcendent ways that point toward belonging and freedom makes a difference—not only in the lives of the students we are called to impact, but also in the lives of the teachers and staff. To actualize the abolitionist rhythms, then, we must define accountability as the method, or methods, directed at ensuring that a system is doing what it was devised to do in the pursuit of freedom from oppression and injustice, for the folx who move, live, and function within the system. As such, an effective accountability mechanism generates information for leaders within the teaching and learning community that can facilitate the abolition of oppressive practices and implicit biases that impede the freedom pursuit. Our existing models of accountability embody a unilateral power politics, without tapping the insights, knowledge, experiences, and agency of every human within our teaching and learning community. As a result, we need to imagine a new system of accountability, where school leaders and teachers, students and families, and community leaders work together to create communal accountability.

This session asks, “What kind of performance assessment experience would we create to ensure that learners, especially those farthest from opportunity, thrive when we operationalize our current vision/profile of a graduate?” Participants will explore the different features of high quality performance assessment (HQPA) and design a prototype of a performance assessment experience that provides evidence of student learning/thinking of essential competencies. The session concludes with participants iterating on that prototype after centering the lived experience of a marginalized student your system may serve, and reflecting on the changes needed to ensure that ALL students thrive in their performance assessment system.

Q/A | Abundant Assessment
SESSION ZOOM LINK

Many assessments are tied to excessively great consequences. Failing a final, for example may force you to repeat an entire class. Such consequences get in the way of using assessments for learning. Consequences are high because assessments are expensive to build, score, and report. They are scarce in economic terms. But what if assessments were abundant? It would turn the economics of assessment on its head. In this short Ignite talk I describe how to build high-quality and abundant assessments and what that could do for our students.

Please view the pre-work video first and come ready to discuss the possibilities.

Workshop | It's Time to Close the Opportunity Gap: Meaningful Metrics for Building and Strengthening Students' Relationships
SESSION ZOOM LINK

The pandemic exposed stark differences in the webs of support and opportunities available to students as they shifted between learning in the classroom and learning from their living rooms. The lack of social and academic resources widened the opportunity gap that existed long before COVID, highlighting the need for all students to access supportive relationships and develop the skills needed to mobilize them as their needs evolve. In the road to recovery, what schools measure for as metrics of student success plays a pivotal role in closing the opportunity gap.

This session will feature researcher Mahnaz Charania sharing design and measurement insights from the Christensen Institute's new playbook, 5 steps for building and strengthening students’ networks. Using this customizable roadmap, education leaders can take a systematic approach to equitably forging and measuring for students' relationships with peers, educators, mentors, and community members across their schools and programs.

Feel free to start diving into the playbook in advance of the session: https://whoyouknow.org/playbook/

Workshop | Notion: Teacher-Made Systems for a Self-Directed Classroom
Notion is an “all-in-one workspace” web app. It offers a set of flexible “blocks” for the user to build custom page and database combinations of extraordinary variety. This open structure gives teachers a chance to tweak and customize aspects of a learning management system to adapt to needs and work flows. While this flexibility isn’t for everyone (a blank canvas is intimidating), this session will demo basic and advanced uses in the classroom: curriculum planning, giving feedback, conferencing, and more. Then we will design some template forms together and share what we come up with.

In formative assessment practice, self-regulation and metacognition are developed over time through daily learning routines where students are engaging with evidence of their own learning and that of their peers. Self-regulation and metacognition are explicitly modeled and taught during daily lessons as students co-create success criteria, engage in peer feedback and conduct self-assessment. In this session we’ll explore what teachers notice as students develop self-regulation skills, and consider how teachers adapt their instructional moves to strengthen student agency at each stage of learning.

Q/A | Ethical Assessment: The Conversation that Has to Happen
SESSION ZOOM LINK

What if there were a Hippocratic Oath for assessment? Do no harm. And what if it went even further? Do good. This webinar by Gary Chapin, of Educating for Good, interrogates our assumptions around assessment and offers a frame for Ethical Assessment that is truthful, kind, aligned to the kid, and, ultimately, for good. Gary has worked with performance assessment for the past seven years with the Center for Collaborative Education and the Assessment for Learning Project. We'll be talking about four general principals ethical assessment system, and also ask, "What does it look like on the ground?" Assessment that is ethical tells a story. It doesn't merely provide a data point. How can we tell stories that best serve kids?

Q/A | SEL Buddies
SESSION ZOOM LINK

This session (in the form of a conversation) will share what was learned from a “practice-research partnership” in which staff working in an alternative high school and researchers co-developed and piloted an authentic measure of SEL. We will highlight the voices of school staff and a former student about their experiences with developing and implementing a collaboratively-designed tool for SEL assessment. Research partners will share the design principles that informed the development of the tool, and that were critical to providing students with authentic opportunities to build relationships with peers and adults, to grow in self-awareness, and to become agents in their own social and emotional learning. The SEL Buddies assessment model illustrates key design principles: socially-mediated, student-centered, and authentic audience and purpose. As researchers, we buddied with the school, teachers buddied with researchers, and students buddied with each other. Students and teachers found the SEL measure a valuable way to capture and nurture SEL progress, while also building trusting relationships and community within advisory classes. Offering students opportunities to interact and provide feedback to their peers on self-defined struggles and goals were perceived as the most valuable aspect of the measure.

LIVE: Participatory Earthrise Chats
SESSION ZOOM LINK

Inspired by one of the most famous photos ever taken, Earthrise Chats invite educators, system leaders, students and community members to ask important questions about our education system, using our current circumstances to take a fundamentally different perspective on familiar issues.

You can see our current Earthrise Chat conversation starter videos here.

In this session, you'll have the opportunity to join an Earthrise Chat of your own! You'll start by watching one of our short Earthrise Chat conversation starters. Then, you'll join a breakout room and use the Earthrise protocol to guide your conversation.

Each Earthrise Chat has a framing question, which you'll see at the beginning and end of the conversation starter video. In the Earthrise protocol, each person begins by sharing how the framing question connects to their work and/or them personally. Then, they pose a question to the group.

Once each person has shared their connection and posed a question, the "chat" part begins. Participants are welcome to respond to one of the questions posed or to respond to something else they heard. At this point the conversation usually flows naturally.

Earthrise Chats are self-facilitated, and we invite you use the Earthrise Chat Conversation Guide if it's helpful. The purpose of Earthrise Chats is to share stories, perspectives and questions that allow us to reconsider familiar topics. Our hope is that after the conference you will take these conversations with you to your school or community, and host your own Earthrise Chat.

Q/A | Accelerating Learning Through Increasing Student Agency
SESSION ZOOM LINK

The following presentation will guide the participants through the steps that our school, C. A. Tatum Jr., has adopted for the implementation of the AFL practices, especially in a bilingual 4th grade classroom. These practices have contributed to accelerated progress in students' academic recovery and have had a significant impact on their results both at the district level and on the MAP assessment. Using some of the 10 dimensions that the AFL program proposes, the facilitators will share: their most frequently used practices and the impact on student academic recovery, metacognitive strategies that have been applied at the time of the evaluation, and the implementation of technology in the classroom. All of which have contributed to the students taking responsibility for their learning and achieving their goals. At the end, presenters will share how the AfL practices have positively impacted the school data and it’s higher performance over the district.

Q/A | Hindsight is 2020: Reflecting on Learning During the Pandemic
SESSION ZOOM LINK

Over the past year, we have all had to rethink the concept of “school.” Using reflection and transparency, Joe Nelson worked with his students to engage in online learning in new ways. The challenge was to not only focus on developing the teacher’s proficiency in facilitating online learning but also to work with students to create conditions that foster agency, encourage reflection, and promote interaction during the learning. In this session, we will hear what students have said about their experience and look at the five moves that the teacher made to become more precise and targeted in his thinking about student identity, emerging learning, and teacher transparency. Come join the session to see how one teacher experienced #LearningFound.

SESSION ZOOM LINK

To prepare for this session, please view the pre-work for this session on Participate and learn asynchronously.
This session will guide participants through considerations for designing authentic performance assessments that support social emotional learning and culturally sustaining pedagogy. Using the Vermont Agency of Education’s Interdisciplinary Performance Assessment Template as a framework, facilitators will share elements and phases of quality performance assessments (e.g., student voice and choice, degree of authenticity, feedback and revision, etc.). Student-centered and asset-based approaches are essential in supporting social emotional and culturally sustaining learning throughout the design and delivery of performance assessments; arts integration can serve as a tool to embed these concepts in practice. Facilitators will share resources and strategies to guide arts and non-arts teachers through identifying areas and concepts that can be integrated across content areas.

SESSION ZOOM LINK

This session is based on a video I hope you can watch before we gather:
Student Perspectives: Belonging, Culture, and Mastery: https://vimeo.com/276059769

"All through (middle school) I felt like: Grades do represent who I am.
You know, if I have 100, that means I am a perfect person, and if I have a 60,
then I’m just no one." —HS student

What are students' little-discussed experiences of school and the hidden curriculum they experience?

How and what can we learn when we listen reflectively to youth?

We don’t give students voice—they already have voices. They need us to listen. Let's talk about working with the students we serve to co-create liberatory, multicultural, and multigenerational education spaces. Workshop | Learning the Work by Doing the Work: Leading for Agency, Identity and Purpose in a High Poverty Urban District
SESSION ZOOM LINK

ID: 6034917684
Passcode: 599081

Principals from Sunnyside Unified School District in Tucson have taken on new models for transformative leadership, focused on developing adult learning cultures that promote student agency, identity and purpose.

Join us to explore how K-12 principals are leading the way to support schoolwide implementation of formative assessment by learning alongside teachers and students, developing cultural norms among adults that mirror those that are necessary in the classroom, and developing teacher agency. Learn how these principals have established new models of professional learning to support teacher and student agency, new observational protocols, and new ways to calibrate instructional practices at the teacher and leader levels.

Learning Goals:
  • Understand ways that leaders support teacher learning and teacher leadership to create systems that support student identity, agency and purpose
  • Explore a range of ways in which leaders have calibrated new instructional practices through cross-district peer observation among leaders (cadre walks), video lesson analysis by teachers (video study protocols), and integrated observational rubrics focused on the student role in learning.
  • Understand ways in which these leaders learn alongside their teachers, and provide robust and continuous models of learning and feedback to deeper teacher professionalism and adult learner agency.

Workshop | Healing the Equity Divide: A Way Forward on Assessment & Accountability for Equity Oriented Educators
SESSION ZOOM LINK

See a video of these Sunnyside Principals Discussing Their Work

The movement around standards-based accountability is at an inflection point. After 30 years, the achievement gaps that the movement was meant to address persist with little change. At the same time, the current state and federal approaches to assessment and accountability seem as ensconced in the educational infrastructure as they ever have been yet stakeholders in the field feel increasingly disconnected from these approaches.

The path forward must bridge the divide between two equity-seeking perspectives; those who see the current approach as harmful to those it was intended to serve and those who fear dismantling the current system, seen as the only mechanism for ensuring underserved students get the supports they need, without a viable replacement. In this session, we will center on what is common – our goal that every child has what they need to thrive. We must look to create a new way forward that acknowledges the wisdom and expertise of all who arrive at this conversation with the goal of educational equity in their hearts.

Q/A | Calculating Confidence
SESSION ZOOM LINK

Meeting ID: 810 3619 8570
Passcode: 866982

Mathematical confidence falters for many students, especially as they begin middle school. As content becomes more complex and demands become more pronounced, students begin to lose both interest and tenacity in math. To further compound the problem, teachers tend to respond to this with “rigor” rather than curiosity.
This session will explore ways to address the challenges with class structures that support confidence and skill development, as well as measurement strategies that can help determine if students are making growth.

More Info:

Consistent, ongoing and informal observations combined with regular conversations about math can bolster positive math mindsets and reveal learned and emerging skills. Particularly in middle school, when students begin to wonder if "math is for them," teachers need to structured classes that entice kids to be curious, courageous and confident mathematicians. By providing challenging, authentic problems to solve, offering options and honoring diverse voices in the classroom, teachers can uncover a broad wealth of information about what students know and can do.

Q/A | Kids Don't Like School? Whaaaaa ...?
SESSION ZOOM LINK

Kids don't like school. We've known that since before Shakespeare's day, and it's weird that we -- educators -- don't really see that as a problem. We will explore the ethical unsoundness of a system that makes a virtue out of "tough love" that is neither love nor tough, but simply well-intentioned coercion and expediency. How can we expect kids not to resist? And how can we construct a system and culture where kids won't want to resist, because it will be theirs as well as ours. Hint: Assessment for Learning is part of the solution.

In this flipped session, you’ll hear from Esther Dabagyan, Principal of STEM Academy of Hollywood and a Linked Learning Fellow, who will provide a broad overview of the school’s holistic, career relevant assessment system that includes interdisciplinary projects throughout high school and culminates in a senior portfolio and defense of learning. She will discuss how this assessment system is connected to the academic and career technical education program of study. David Trachtenberg, a teacher at STEM Academy of Hollywood and also a Linked Learning Fellow, along with Dr. Neil Chawla of Kaiser, will describe how career relevant assessment is a part of Thrive Academy, a focused 3-week summer school program for 7-8th graders from LeConte Middle School and 9-10th graders from STEM Academy of Hollywood. Students in this program go through an intensive project-based, advocacy-focused, public health curriculum centered on their own community. The program culminates in a final community-based advocacy project that is presented on the last day. You’ll hear how industry partners are fully integrated into the design and implementation of the project and the assessment of student learning. The panel will close with a reflection from a STEM Academy of Hollywood student on the learning experience.

Q/A | Student Defenses of Learning: Increase Student Agency through Performance Assessment - Shelby County East Middle School
SESSION ZOOM LINK

Please view our flipped session before the May 7th Q&A! In the flipped session, representatives from our school's 8th grade defense team (Instructional Coach, Teacher Leaders, and principal) share how we utilize student defenses of learning as a performance assessment. We will share our journey of how we began and explain how we have grown in our own understanding along the way. Our students' 8th grade defenses increase their agency, allowing the students to better advocate for themselves as they prepare to transition to high school. We believe the same can occur with student defenses of learning at any level of learning (elementary, middle, high school).

Workshop | Learning from Teachers and Students - A Framework for Noticing Learner Agency
SESSION ZOOM LINK

ID: 6034917684
Passcode: 599081

Explore a framework to strengthen how we listen for, and notice, evidence of agency during learning.

Ask 10 educators what they notice when looking for evidence of agency and it is very likely there will be 10 different responses. And ask those same educators to come up with some agreement about what teachers do to specifically support learner agency, and the responses are likely to be even more varied. With vague terms and such a wide range of instructional practices, is it possible to develop a shared understanding of what is happening during lessons that supports agency, or how students demonstrate it during learning? Can we come to consensus on what we hear or see that is evidence of learner agency?
During this workshop we will explore a new framework, rooted in formative assessment literature, that sharpens how we notice the ways in which teachers and students develop and support agency. We’ll briefly explore the research underlying the framework and practice noticing learner agency using an exemplar formative assessment online lesson. We’ll explore how others have applied the framework to deepen support of student-led conferencing, project-based learning and formative assessment implementation. We’ll close with an exploration of how you might refine or extend the framework for use at your sites.

Learning Goals:
  • Understand a schema for noticing how agency is expressed by teachers and students.
  • Explore the relationship between the instructional practices that support learners to develop the skills of agency, and how students demonstrate these practices during learning, and when asked about how they learn.
  • Consider ways that you can apply this framework at your site.
  • Understand common misconceptions about student agency and how these can inadvertently become limiting factors in student-centered learning.
